The Masarang Palm Sugar Factory is Masarang Foundation's most well-known project, which is widely supported, including support from the Indonesian Government.

This factory is not only the world’s first palm sugar factory, moreover it’s unique because it obtains its energy from waste steam. The subterranean heat from remnant volcanic activity produces steam that is used to generate electricity after which it has to be condensed and cooled to be reinjected into to the soil to become new steam. Part of this waste steam is utilized by the factory to damp in the sugary palm juice which saves Tomohon more than 200.000 trees per year cut as fuel wood. Not just that. All the members of the cooperative have signed a declaration that in return for the processing of their palm juice they will no longer take timber from protected forests and will protect the local wildlife.

In addition in the sugar process no chemicals or other additives are used and is the factory’s zero waste as well. Even the cooling water is recycled. Side products like molasses are used by the women groups to make small businesses supported by micro-credits
